Back in the day you could get free websites and free bandwidth if you worked hard, but as the Beebotron became more popular it became obvious that this wasn't the way forward. So I asked on the net if there was anyone who had a server and a bit of free bandwidth. Rick (Ricklous) put his hand up and the rest is history.

Rick has provided the server and the beebotron.org URL for many years, and all out of his own pocket - and that's just not fair.

So we needed to find a way of funding him, and donations sounded like a good way.

Basically, Rick needs to recover around £15 that's hitting his credit card monthly . This would cover the cost of the basic site - anything extra would be used to make the site a bit better in, for example, response times.

It's obvious from the weblogs that the Beebotron is well used, so whether you're a regular contributor, lurker, or just a user of the links it would be great if you could help the cause!

The Paypal buttons - either for donating in £ or $ - bypass me and lead directly to Rick's Paypal site, which is 100% secure.

Go to the Control Centre via the link at the very top of the page, then from the block of categories on the left select "Forum Settings". From the options that appear on the right, look at the one labelled "Which follow-topic options should be selected by default?", which should be set to "Follow topics and email me replies". If its not, change it and click the 'Submit' button at the bottom.

Once thats set, look at a thread and within the reply box at the bottom there are two tickboxes labelled 'Follow Topic' and 'Email me about replies to this topic', which should both be ticked. If they are and you post a reply, then the next time someone replies to the thread you'll get an email telling you theres a new reply with a direct link to the thread.

The mail system is mostly back in one piece now. I've had a day of replacing flat tyres only to discover the brakes are shot, and changing them to find the alignment needs sorting, then discovering the batteries been flat all along. And now I need to track down the annoying humming noise that wasn't there before the service...

Theres a problem with the mail server, which I've been trying to fix through the day. getting closer but it might be a while yet. It may mean you don't get emails telling you your threads have been replied to.

Martyn, this will be affecting your main beebotron address too. you probably can't send or receive anything at the moment.

This is a copy of one of the graphs the monitoring software produces. Fail2ban monitors the logs, notices hacks/general naughtyness and bans the place it came from. As you can see it's been a bit busy since sunday...

For now the fort seems to be holding, I don't see any evidence of a successful hack. I'm keeping an eye on things though. We feel that since it does cause confusion, especially for those who are using the Recent Messages feature, and that the Subject Line is the thread title and should remain so throughout the thread. If a poster feels the Subject Line needs to be changed, then it's time for a new thread.

To handle subject changes within threads, it is suggested that you can add your subtitle at the top of your post and change type characteristics such as color/bold/italics. For example:

SPOILER ALERT
SPOILER ALERT
SPOILER ALERT

....anything like this at the top the poster's message should suffice. The toolbar buttons (B, I, U...) at the top of each message field will change the text desired. If you'd like to practice these, Kronalias has created a WMP Sandpit area where you can play with the all the Phorum's posting functions available to you.

And, as always, if you need any assistance, let one of the admins or moderators know, and we'd be happy to assist you.

I'm really sorry about this. You'd think that a site that's been going for as long as the Beebotron has would provide that info - but there y'go, it doesn't.

In the absence of said page, it's worth keeping in touch by checking on the most recent messages, as in please click the Recent Messages link on the North East (that's in the Northern hemisphere - might be different down under...) corner of this page.

You might like to get your feet wet and post a question or two. Trust me, it's a really friendly area and nobody will bite you!
