Its expensive but the BBC actually do some excellent readings (which as you may have noticed) is my favourite genre of really good books under the Chivers label. It does seem wrong to me that these are only available under the BBCs commercial arm, and never appear on Radio. Particularly since there is presumably only one fee and one performer to hold copyright. They also have very cheap offers of various radio shows, but as I have heard those I like so often on R4X I really dont need my own copy!!

I usually buy through Audio Go and their offers (apart from the free postage ones) are usually available outside the UK. In America it might be worth trying the BBC Shop America.

Isn't it a shame there isn't a service like netflix for audio books? We have audio books at the library, but it's not much of a choice. I saw an ad on one of the UK sites I frequent that audible UK is giving away one book for every new subscription. I haven't tried it yet nor do I know if you are outside the UK if you can take advantage of the offer.

I know the BBC doesn't condone such acts, but if you have the ability to "bank" readings and plays, you will have enough for the dry periods. And there are other online resources if you go fast enough (i.e. high speed internet or broadband).

A am with you Tru - or rather ahead of you, as I had decided some time ago I had to supplement the meagre diet of the BBC by richer fare elsewhere.

I had hoped that the silver lininng of the closer link to R4 would be that there would be more access to "restricted" archive material but it seems they are just taking in more of its dirty washing.

Same with World Service - when the cost was transferred fromthe UK taxpayer to the BBC I though the BBC would take advantage of access to the many excellent programmes World Service had it is coffers. What has happened to them?

It's a good thing there are lots of "board" games at the Beebotron, else we might risk death from boredom hanging on for sufficient BBC quality real archive content. For the first time in 60 years, am finally coming round to accepting I'll have to start buying audio books and other such to fill the VOID. These past couple of weeks have, imo, been the WORST.

I don't listen to 4 anymore at all, so shipping its blather over here, doesn't help ONE JOT. I stooped to tune in to that tosh about cake currently airing and was plunged into the slough of despond. As for the greats allowed in our diet: likely lads, dad's A, men from the, Steptoe etc. etc. they've become mantras, a kind of radio Karaoke ... I know em by heart. It's the PITS. Good thing I've an Opera venue this week ... (Rusalka!)

Are the cops searching for 'em that's took Auntie's (the license payer's) silver, that's what I wanna know!

I think I feel the same, Parsival, sort of mixed. I'm glad to see there are more R4x commissioned programs. That's always good. I'm also pleased that they've managed to retain a laid-back style.

I do agree with PAW that it's odd that they repeat R4 programs so quickly. I understand about the 15 Minute Drama omnibus as they were doing that on R4 anyway, they've just moved it, but some of the comedy programs are repeated, sometimes, within a few days.

All in all it's not too bad, and far better than I'd feared. I think Mary went to the wall to keep it as intact as it is, for which I am very appreciative. :)

That pesky clearance issue again! It's going to get trickier now that everyone is starting to get their radio content online rather than on a stand alone unit. Or is the situation different in the UK? I feel like one of the few people still listening to radio content on an analog radio even when I am out on my errands (using my old Sports Walkman). Most people I know have smart phones they get their favorite radio shows on.

When Listen Again was introduced the rights were for seven days after broadcast and that took a lot of negotiation; when Station Z was proposed one of the early ideas was that the topical shows (News Quiz & Now Show) would get a repeat broadcast, though nothing was said about duplicating the Radio 4 comedy output.

What I don't understand is why they don't just extend the replays on iPlayer an extra week instead of putting them on 4xtra. What they are giving us is known as padding. Plus a lot of the shows are ones we've heard 3 or 4 times on R7. I understand the clearance issues, and maybe that's the reason for all the repeats.

I appreciate the underwhelming amount of programs to listen to because the frustration with a lot of shows to listen to would be my not getting to or through everything. So maybe I don't know what I want. Something in the middle of not too many new stuff to listen to and too much to listen to. BTW who do I email to make a request? I'd love to hear a couple of books of the week from a few years back. I just missed the repeat window on both at a Hong Kong radio station which keeps their programs on listen again for a year.

The majority of the programmes the newsletter lists as being new are from the previous weeks Radio 4, so a bit pointless. It's not as if they've run out of archive material.

And before anyone claims it's good to do that so people don't miss something, why not have another station which plays programmes from two weeks ago, and another for three weeks ago...

In some respects, i have not been too happy about programmes airing on R4X the week after appearing on R4. I wasn't too keen about it happening with ISIHAC, before, and I'm no more enamoured now. One thing that I have been happy about is the idea of giving programmes the chance of one series and then a change - something that I asked for on R7, but was always ignored. Of course, this doesn't work for HHH, which goes on and on; I see that we have looped back to the Andree Melly episodes - it would have been better to have included her brother George.

I had never heard the TV Lark and am not too impressed now, but it was nice to get the chance.

My thoughts? On the whole, some good changes, some old faults and s report of, 'B+ could do better'.

As we move closer to the date of when R4 Extra came into being, I was wondering how you all think of it so far.

True, there have been some new regular programmes that I avoid because they just do not appeal, but there has been quite a few plus marks with some appearing almost on request and others quite close to the previous R4 airings, which at times is good as far as catching up goes.

Of course the BBC7 'regulars' still occur, but there has been a lot of new things in the mix that have been very welcome.

I'm not really sure if this is my kind of place - I didn't see a Games Room - but I noticed there was a bit of a furore over at the 'other place' and thought I'd look in here to see what it's like.

There's no lack of smileys here, you just need to know where to look.
Standard ones are at the right side of the message tools (top of the box you write your message in look for the .)
And if that's not enough look at this phorum
Just choose the one you want and put it in the img tags, click on the for more info.
