Thanks Janaru,

I used to post such a lot on the BBC7 board and then disappeared because I could not get help to get on the BBC website again and it took over a year to sort out so to be welcomed when we had not as much contact as we could've is appreciated. Hopefully we'll put that right...

I'll tell you something else...I know some names used by posters are long(Look at mine)but there is something kind of affectionate the way we all find ways of using alternative deravations of our nondeplumes...I answer to just about anythingwinking smiley

I've also said elsewhere that without overdoing smilies they can be handy when sometimes something can be misinterupted because we are unable to see an expression or hear a tone of voice but again this another reason for trying to be informal.

I've much to read and catch up on...

Oh - thanks for that info, Tru: I was wondering if we'd be able to access the archives, as it were.

Yes, Gildy, you're right about abbreviations - it's something I always used to do when responding to people's posts and then retrospectively hoped that people didn't mind. But I agree - it is kinda friendly. cool smiley

In case anyone's interested there's (a bit of a long) thread full of a wide variety of smilies to use HERE. You'll need to trawl down, it goes on a couple of pages. But there's plenty of choice there. I worry however, that some of the visually challenged might find their automated readers have trouble deciphering posts containing emoticons though. sad smiley

Hello everyone. Truthyness suggested I would be welcomed here. I am so pleased to be among wonderful R7 listeners and messageboard refugees because I am feeling bereft today. I loved reading the messageboards because people were so polite and informative and it was great to get posts from the great Bert Coules and others I admire. R7 was my constant companion and I am hoping I will get used to 4Extra in time although I think my listening will be cut down somewhat.
Good luck to everyone out there and thanks for this home from home.

Been here for a while, in spirit at least.
R4 Extra schedule looks OK to me.
I haven't listened to The Archers for over forty years but I might just find myself downloading some classic episodes hoping to find Doughie Hood, Nora Salt and others from back when it was almost believable.

Hello Tiger,

Nice see you,

I think like you some of my listening will be reduced or I'll have to adapt to the new schedule, I think the change is necause there are fewer archive programmes for the BBC to broadcast and tied into that are copyright issues and that in turn brings in the matter of cost. That also means that some of the new programmes are talk based which is cheaper to produce than drama and comedy etc...

It is very much a case of wait and see.

I have seen changes across all BBC Radio networks.

All public broadcasters are having problems...

Commercial Radio has been cutting what they do too.

I suppose we are still lucky to have the BBC.

Hello Janaru: Thankyou for your wlecome.
Also thanks to The Great Gildersleeve for such an informative post. I think what you say is true about talk based radio being cheaper, so that will probably mean more readings. I don't really mind this because I used to enjoy the much missed, for me anyway, OneWord.
We are still lucky to have the still mostly quality BBC, especially when you hear such terrible tales about radio stations abroad.
Let us all hope for better times ahead on the financial front for the sake of good broadcasting.

Well said, Tiger.

And by the way, you and Lady Penelope have something in common. She loves unabridged readings too, and misses One Word desperately. So much so that she has a hard time finding anything worth listening to anymore.

With no disrespect to any of the others, past and present, your presence here has really made my day. As I have only returned from hospital this afternoon, this was the height of what has proved to be a successful week.

Err,,,,,,,,,, actually, Jan., I I can remember having hear d"One Word"! Maybe you are confusing it with my plea for "My Word" to be repeated!

But it is true I have been campaigning for more unabridged readings (as opposed to dramatisations) of good books. If you enjoy books Tiger there is a forum "Good Books and Readings" to discuss books and ways of accessing them, oral and printed page. I hope people will put recommendations on there as well as discussions of things they hve heard and read, although I havent been able to do much recently because of other pressures.

Sadly I doubt the current situation will lead to more readings. They may be cheaper but they employ fewer people and I think (perhaps understandably) keeping jobs is the priority of those who make these decisions.

There used to be a site where you could find all sorts of readings and performances and I thought that site was called One Word. The sources weren't strictly BBC either. Some were culled from actual stage performances. Maybe rights issues killed the site.

Just about right Mars - "Oneword" was a commercial digital station broadcasting all sorts of speech based programmes (mostly drama). It went to the wall.....must be over a year ago now - cant remember when, for sure - due to lack of advertising revenue. It was replaced by broadcasts of nothing but birdsong......and listening figures shot up!

I'm NOT paranoid......thats just what THEY want you to think!!!

I stopped going to the pub years ago - because they banned smoking and turned the telly up. This feels like the first time in a friendly pub for so long (I won't smoke) and there's Janaru behind the bar with all that knowledge and wisdom and the dimes for a jukebox full of radio. All is not lost.
Re: Welcome R7 Messageboard Refugees

Lady Penelope: Thanks for your advice on the book forum. I have a room in my house devoted to books which amuses my family! At the moment I am trying to clear some space for more, by reading unread ones I do not think I will enjoy. There have been a few surprises because some are brilliant. The unloved ones go to our village library which is run by volunteers. They either lend them or sell them to buy more.
The Oneword station started in 2000 and in 2008 and I still miss it.
I am finding 4Extra rather hard going because the schedule is so chopped up, I can't get my bearings. There are many more items only 15 minutes long and no meaty slabs which I love.
World class radio drama such as The Barchester Chronicles, was replaced by Ambridge Extra today and thought was dire in the extreme.

Re: Welcome R7 Messageboard Refugees

Im just like you, tiger, only I have the books scattered around the house. It was when there was no more room for bookshelves I started a clearout(I give them to Charity Shops, where I also always buy more than I gave away!), but there is a hard core that I keep and re read and reread, Why not suggest some of your favourites on the book forum.

Real life has been a b.............. recently, so have not been listening much (except Arms and the Man which I have seen and heard so often I nearly know it by heart, and dont have to concentrate so hard!) I need to catch up with the Archers. Havent got round to Ambridge Extra yet, am not really looking forward to it . but shouldnt criticise till I have heard at least one episode.

Yes I prefer longer programmes too. l5 mins is too short for most things , they are over before I have really got into them.

???

There is a village in the area where I live that have bought a red telephone kiosk for £1. They have kitted it out with shelves. People have left unwanted books in there and these are borrowed, returned, replaced and added to (as the Child-snatcher put it, All for free!).

Wow, i love that idea, wish they'd do something like that around here. Though i am blessed with having a good selection of libraries to choose from this seems more friendly somehow.
You could even leave bookmarks with notes on inside recommending similar or just other friendly notes.

Ha! We have a smoking section, too, Robert! Penny and I are definite members of that circle smoking smiley Kronalias just quite a few months ago, so we try and keep it on the DL (that's down-low for the uninitiated winking smiley ) for his sake, and just sneak a quick drag or two in the ladies.

But, light-up if you want, punch in your favorite tune, belly-up to the bar and tell me what you're havin', dahlin' smileys with beer

As for the book trading there is a website here, can't remember the name at the moment, where you can post drop sites for your used books (i.e. I have a box of paperback mysteries that need a good home. I'll leave them at such-and-such for pick-up if anyone wants them.) I've never used it myself, but thought it was a grand idea. Really like the phone box twist, too, Ive!

At last I have made it on here! 2.21am cannot sleep! Still annoyed when I hear the new R4X tune, much preferred 7. Not impressed by their early monring prgrammes, especially ambridge youth programme.

Hey, Roy! Glad you made it!!!

One nice thing about this board....we never close! And there are usually enough time zones covered that someone is bound to be on smiling smiley

I'm with you! I hate the new ID blurb sad smiley Sounds to R4-ish to me. I liked the other friendly one much better! I heard the Ambridge Extra today, and was pretty dire even for an Archers fan tongue sticking out smiley
