Krakatoa, East of Jav

This isn't a serious entry; it's just a way for me to have a moan about one of my Bête noires. Krakatoa (Rakata) is WEST of Java, between Sumatra and Java!

For my real entry I'll go for the main income of the penguin keeper - HAPPY FEE

Don't have the time to find the exact quote but in Bleak Expectations Pip describes how he can feel something evil to the East, out past France, across Europe, through India and China, further and further east, across the newly discovered America, even further east across the Atlantic ocean, and Ireland, and the west coast of England.

Is that like "Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do."?

Long time ago, someone I knew was arrested for stealing a car and driving without license, insurance, etc. It wasn't stealing it off the street, it belonged to the people he shared the house with and they didn't mind, so it was a fine and points to go on his license when he got one. But what ties it to this thread is the way the police noticed him - as he couldn't drive he avoided any right hand turns, ie those where he'd have to cross traffic, so often he was making three lefts rather than one right.

I was in London (quite) a few years back and that was the procedure for turning right.

PS Surely in America you would have to make three right hand turns to turn left, as they drive on the wrong side of the road?winking smiley

No, you are mistaken. We are never wrong. Therefore, wherever we drive is perfect in every way. tongue sticking out smiley

Years ago (when there were few foreign tourists in that country) I was driving on a lonely twisting mountain road in Turkey, hogging the middle of the road because I did not like the thought of what would happen if the edge of the road crumbled. Rounding a bend came face to face with another car in the middle of the road coming towards me.Automatically I swerved to the left - realising with horror too late what I had done. Fortunately the other car also pulled over to the left. Mentally congratulating the other driver on his fast thinking and reactions, I looked in the mirror - to see the GB nationality plate on the back of his car., As my mother used to say "better to be born lucky than rich"!

All this talk of left and right has reminded me of "keep on turning to the right" - Harris's theory for finding the way out of Hampton Court Maze in"Three Men in a Boat" and immortalised in song by Kenneth Horne in the Radio musical of the book. It has been on R7 a couple of times - I wonder if /when R4X will repeat it - it must be about due for an airing.

Oooh, that was lucky, Pen. I agree, I'd much rather be lucky, especially when it counts.

Years ago, I was driving with my husband, we were coming down from the mountains on a road here that's notorious for car accidents. I was going into a pretty intense right curve and my right wheel came completely off the car! It rolled right across the other lane. Now, this is an extremely busy road, as it also leads to one of the Indian Casino's here, but somehow, there was absolutely no oncoming traffic. The wheel went off into a field (we never did find the thing). I swerved the car to the right, off the road which was very soft dirt, and by all rights, at the speed I was going, should have dug the axle in and flipped us end-over-end. It only stopped the car and we were terrified but fine.

The couple who were behind us saw the whole thing and stopped to make sure we were okay. They were amazed that no one was hurt. They were so kind. They helped us look for the wheel, and took us into town where we could call for help.

That's like hitting the jackpot in the lottery of life, right there.

And just to stay on topic...

That reminds me of a fast 'food' place which only served relatives - Burger Kin.

And as long as we're not inside a theatre we can say Macbeth and quote lines without anything happening.
