Space Weather News for March 10, 2011
[spaceweather.com]

X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: March 9th ended with a powerful solar flare. Less than an hour before midnight (UT), Earth-orbiting satellites detected an X1.5-class explosion from behemoth sunspot 1166. First-look data suggest that the blast did hurl some material toward Earth. Check spaceweather.com for movies of the flare and updates on its possible effects.

So it looks like we could have some electromagnetic storms in the next couple of days. Great. confused smiley

Jan, not being into astro things I am not sure whether that is the Royal (ie American!) "we" or the editorial ,( ie worldwide)

Certainly we have had a lot of thunder and lightening and rain this week (though that is common for this time of year) but also a sprinkling of now on the mountains, which is not unprecedented but fairly unusual. Anyways round it brass monkey cold.

Editorial we, Pen. Usually solar flares, if aimed toward the Earth, will cause increased Aurora activity and can cause a lot of communications problems (i.e. interference, static, etc...).

It's d*mn near impossible to predict what the actual effects will be and it depends on how much we get. Sometimes it's a hiccup and sometimes I can't get anything tuned in. eye rolling smiley

Been at it again has she?whistling smiley

So far this evening, the Archer's have developed the echo effect(blame the BBC), a local website is unavailable(and known to be unreliable anyway), and an email has disappeared into ciber space (err probably operator - me - error ) Now I can blame it all on solar activity!

Apparently the new moon tonight is 2 degrees closer to the earth than for l9 years and should appear larger......Anyone been out to look?

Certainly it is large and bright here, but it usually is. However combined with the Spring Equinox might be worth wish..............................

Hope we will be able to see the moon tonight. It has been raining since last night (Friday night).

Yeah I had a look before the clouds came in. It was full and bright, but not being an expert selenologist, I couldn't tell whether it was the biggest and brightest moon that I ever did see. People have said that I am an expert lunatic, but I think that they are mad.

I was going to post about this, but my internet was down. Thanks for reminding me about it, Pen. Unfortunately we've had rain the last few days and the cloud cover is pretty thick. sad smiley

Thats what friends are for Janu. I saw something about it on a local forum, wondered why you hadnt mentioned it, and guessed is was something like that.

What I failed to notice was that the big bright moon had a ring round it. So after several days of warn sunny weather, the first day of Spring has come in with non stop rain! The longitudinal thing again, Jan.

PS Again couldnt get Ivor's emoticon. But I am visualising a big bold wolf howling a the moon.

I've lost it, too! As I recall, it was a gurning face with rolling eyes, suggesting lunacy. So, you're not missing much.

I'm listening to the Queen concert, while I'm typing. Surprised that there are no misspellings.

SOLAR RADIO STORM: A profusion of emerging sunspots has kicked off a days-long radio storm on the sun. VHF receivers on Earth are picking up loud bursts that sound like waves crashing on a beach. This ongoing event continues a recent trend of increasing activity as Solar Cycle 24 heats up. Check [spaceweather.com] for audio and images of the instigating sunspots.

Endeavour has left the planet. The space shuttle lifted off this morning at 8:56 am EDT on a two week mission to the International Space Station. There it will deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer--a $1.5 billion cosmic ray detector that could reveal the nature of dark matter and find whole galaxies made of antimatter.

Links to more information are available at [spaceweather.com].

This is Endeavour's final flight as the shuttle program winds down. During the mission, Endeavour will make numerous passes over North America, Australia, and other places. Would you like to see it one last time? You can turn your cell phone into a field tested shuttle tracker by downloading our Simple Flybys app. Details at [simpleflybys.com]
