I want Louis Armstrong - and I want him there, in person, live, smiling and dancing and making the angels weep.

What a dreadful thread!

Oh well, Blod knows mine already:

All Things Bright And Beautiful - Anyone who turns up
Morning Has Broken - Cat Stevens
Fat Bottomed Girls - Queen

I also rather liked the choice of a good friend who fell off his twig a few years back...

Only one song, rum? Surely you have a list.

Maybe Everything's gonna be all right - but then again, maybe not.

I don't think there is anything 'horrible' about this thread. It is just about the music you would want people to remember you by. My dad always liked 'Albatross' by Fleetwood Mac (that's 'proper' FM, not the Stevie Nicks/Lindsay Buckingham Band) and it was played at his cremation. My FiL played in a brass band and they all came and played for him; he went out to 'Sussex by the Sea'.

This is why I love you, K!!!! Excellent choices my friend!

I don't think I would make a "Funeral" list...but I'll have a think on ones to remember me by. I know my niece's ring-tone for me is "Killer Queen"....interpret that how ya' want. winking smiley

My Auntie just passed away. She wants 'The Londonderry Air' (Danny Boy).

I reckon the day Auntie's Radio 4 33 year old 5 minute medley of Danny Boy, What Shall We Do With The Drunken Sailor, Scotland the Brave and Rule Britannia was given the chop that effectively sounded the channel's death knell. Sigh!

Thanks Jan. It's my third funeral in Scotland this year. I like going home but it's tough under these circumstances. One of my other Aunties died the same day as my mum, in March this year. My Auntie Katie will be buried on Monday. She was 89, so not bad really. It's the first burial I've been to for a while, the others were cremations.

After I gave up working 'On Call' and up to the demise of both parents, the in-night ringing of the bedroom extension usually meant a problem with one of them. Even now, when I hear the ringing of that instrument the hairs stand on the back of my neck.

Sorry to hear about your aunt, rum. Hope the funeral went as well as these things can. Did you have the Londonderry Air?

There was a time, I think, when "My Way" was the most popular funeral song choice, but "Bird on the Wire" might be more appropriate - in my case, at least. Another popular choice is Eric Idle's "Always Look on the Bright Side".

How about Chairmen of the Board's "Give Me Just a Little More Time"? Or Joan Baez's "There But For Fortune"?

Thanks Tick,

yes, it was a requiem mass and the organist played 'Londonderry Air' as she was brought into the church (as she had requested). It was cold at the graveside but sunny and no wind or rain, so it went as well as these things can. I saw a lot of my family, which is the upside of these occasions for me (I know that isn't the case for everyone but my family all get on pretty well).

I am still opting for 'Who knows where the time goes' by Fairport, featuring Sandy Denny.

I want one of Paul McCarney's least known songs, an album track from 1989's Flowers In The Dirt album called This One. Here are the lyrics:-

THIS ONE, THIS ONE, THIS ONE, THIS ONE.

DID I EVER TAKE YOU IN MY ARMS,
LOOK YOU IN THE EYE, TELL YOU THAT I DO?
DID I EVER OPEN UP MY HEART,
LET YOU LOOK INSIDE?

IF I NEVER DID IT, I WAS ONLY WAITING
FOR A BETTER MOMENT THAT DIDN'T COME.
THERE NEVER COULD BE A BETTER MOMENT
THAN THIS ONE, THIS ONE.

THE SWAN IS GLIDING ABOVE THE OCEAN,
A GOD IS RIDING UPON HIS BACK.
HOW CALM THE WATER AND BRIGHT THE RAINBOW
FADE THIS ONE TO BLACK.

DID I EVER TOUCH YOU ON THE CHEEK,
SAY THAT YOU WERE MINE, THANK YOU FOR THE SMILE?
DID I EVER KNOCK UPON YOUR DOOR
AND TRY TO GET INSIDE?

IF I NEVER DID IT, I WAS ONLY WAITING
FOR A BETTER MOMENT THAT DIDN'T COME.
THERE NEVER COULD BE A BETTER MOMENT
THAN THIS ONE, THIS ONE.

THE SWAN IS GLIDING ABOVE THE OCEAN,
A GOD IS RIDING UPON HIS BACK.
HOW CALM THE WATER AND BRIGHT THE RAINBOW
FADE THIS SWAN TO BLACK.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES DID WE ALLOW TO FLOW BY
FEELING LIKE THE TIMING WASN'T QUITE RIGHT?
WHAT KIND OF MAGIC MIGHT HAVE WORKED IF WE HAD STAYED CALM,
COULDN'T I HAVE GIVEN YOU A BETTER LIFE?

DID YOU EVER TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS,
LOOK ME IN THE EYE, TELL ME THAT YOU DO?
DID I EVER OPEN UP MY HEART,
LET YOU LOOK INSIDE?

IF I NEVER DID IT, I WAS ONLY WAITING
FOR A BETTER MOMENT THAT DIDN'T COME.
THERE NEVER COULD BE A BETTER MOMENT
THAN THIS ONE, THIS ONE.

THE SWAN IS GLIDING (is gliding)
ABOVE THE OCEAN, (above the ocean)
A GOD IS RIDING (a god is riding
UPON HIS BACK. (on his back)
HOW CALM THE WATER (calm the water)
AND BRIGHT THE RAINBOW (bright the rainbow
FADE THIS SWAN TO BLACK.

THE SWAN IS GLIDING, OOH -
A GOD IS RIDING, OOH -
HOW CALM THE WATER,
BRIGHT, BRIGHT THE RAINBOW, OOH -.

And here's the song:-

My laptop won't let me do the Tube, but the words are beautiful, and I don't remember every hearing that one before. Good choice.

It's from an album - Flowers In The Dirt - that deserves a hell of a lot more attention than it gets, and is on a par with Band On The Run and Venus And Mars in my opinion. What's more, he co-writes some of the songs with Elvis Costello (and 'duets' with him on 'You Want Her Too') the first time he's co-written since John. I heartily recommend the album if you got music tokens for Christmas...

Yup you guys, that is definitely new to me and sounds like a must, thus far I've not had too much (yeowch duck as the missiles fly) time for McCartney in his later incarnations (being an unswerving Lennon worshiper) but perhaps some time should be taken to reconsider ...
