Great Driving Songs
1707 Fri 29 June 2012
I'm hardly the most appropriate person to start this thread as I don't drive. I walk or I catch the bus. But there are songs that you just feel that you'd have on the stereo - whether its an in-car one or on your mp3 player or walkman - when you're going along the highway.

You can nominate 3 songs each to fill up our CD Box Set of Great Driving Songs.

Here's mine:

Gotta See Jane - R Dean Taylor

Fly Like An Eagle - Steve Miller Band

Spanish Stroll - Mink DeVille

Well at the moment with only six songs we can't even muster a single CD. Where is everybody?

What makes a great driving song? I like something I can sing along with, but maybe something soothing would be better to prevent road rage. Here's one of each.

Like A Rolling Stone ~ Bob Dylan

Wild Mountain Thyme (Blooming Heather) ~ Kate Rusby

aGotta see Jane - Sweet

bFanfare for the Common Man - Emerson, Lake & Palmer/I Feel Love - Donna Summer

c1812 Overture - Any sparkling orchestra.

a My first wife was named Jane and I used to sing along to this while driving through the rain to see her.
b These are the first two tracks on a tape that I produced for when I was driving and I always sing the latter if I hear the former.
c When you are driving into work at 04:00 to Cross-match blood for someone who thinks that 8 pints make you indestructible, you need something that keeps you awake when played at full volume (windows wound up tight, of course).

Sorry Supe. I appear to have duplicated one of your tracks, although we have chosen different artists. Perhaps one could segue into the other.

As a themed trio, I would like to have

Last Train to San Fernando - Johnny Duncan & Bluegrass Boys
Last Train to Clarksville - The Monkees
Rock Island Line - Lonnie Donnegan

I know that they're not about cars, but I can dream that I'm driving engines!

Bad Case Of Loving You - Robert Palmer

Going To My Hometown (from Live in Europe) - Rory Gallagher

Crossroads (live) - Cream

Each of these best experienced at a speed not slower than 70mph on a quiet motorway so you can thump the steering wheel in time with the beat.

So that's exactly 70mph, then (+ up to 10%)!

Depends on where you're driving, isn't it? Driving down the CA coast, any Beach Boys song, but Fun, Fun, Fun would be one of the top 3.
Was on the freeway the other day, and we were all cruising 65+ mph (that's all I am admitting to) and Eddie Rabbit's Driving My Life Away was a great song to drive to. Drove to I'm a Believer today and tonight I had the Due South theme during my short commute home.

Now if you are driving around the northern part of Arizona, the Grand Canyon Suite wouldn't go amiss.

I'd have chosen differently for Led Zep and for Deep Purple. I'd have gone for Immigrant Song and When A Blind Man Cries respectively.

I'm not a great fan of reality shows on TV, but I was enthralled at the episodes of one called Ice Road Truckers, so much so that I catch it on the History Channel when I can, and have just bought the dvd box set of series one. Wonder what they have on their stereos to see them through the miles?

Totally agree, Mars! Beach Boys are a must for the PCH. cool smiley

And I agree, Superman. My driving Zep would most definitely be Immigrant Song! smiling smiley

In the back seat, I'm afraid.

(Are we nearly there yet?)

This is a tantalising thread for me, because although I can't drive, I know there have been several songs which when I listen to them make me feel almost as if I'm at the controls of the starship Enterprise, and therefore, they are also presumably good driving songs - but I can't remember a single damned one of them.

Cudgelling the old brains, anyway, consulting some of my lists, and apologising in advance in case not one of these back-seat suggestions is suitable (I'm, er, driven to the conclusion that I don't listen to a lot of this sort of music!):

From Led Zep, how about Trampled Underfoot, or Achilles Last Stand?

And hasn't Wayne's World convinced everybody that Bohemian Rhapsody is a good driving song? No? Only for idiots, then?

The Chain, by Fleetwood Mac? (Takes a while to get going.)

Inside Out, by Genesis? (Ditto.)

Piece of Mind, or Over and Above, by Curved Air? (But I only have these on LP, haven't heard them for years.) (Anyway, you'd probably soon find yourself trying to drive in both directions on the central reservation.)

All That Jazz, by Echo and the Bunnymen? (Ditto, can hardly remember what it was like at all, may be the wrong track.)

The Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt, by the Shadows? (Ooh, it's spelt wrong at Wikipedia!)

Equinoxe Part IV, by Jean-Michel Jarre?

Siol Ghoraidh, by Runrig?

Back in the U.S.S.R., by the Beatles.

I Get Around, by the Beach Boys.

Spanish Main, by the Coral? (A bit too short, I fear.)

Vertigo, by U2.

Silver Machine, by Hawkwind.

Knights of Cydonia, by Muse.

One Voice, by John Watts.

2-4-6-8 Motorway, by the Tom Robinson Band.

Shot by Both Sides, by Magazine.

Steady, As She Goes, by the Raconteurs.

Seven Nation Army, by the White Stripes.

Smells Like Teen Spirit, by Nirvana.

U-Fig, by System of a Down. (On second thoughts, this might make you drive straight into a brick wall!)

Get Free, by the Vines.

Zoo Time, by (the) Mystery Jets.

Light Flight, by (the) Pentangle?

Shrimp.SNG, by Sphere^3. (If you can find it!)

Buck Rogers, by Feeder.

Richard III (definitely!), and Sun Hits the Sky (maybe), by Supergrass.

Song 2, by Blur. (Definitely.)

Hocus Pocus, by Focus. (Ditto.)

Holiday, by Weezer.

Welcome to the North, by The Music.

I've Got An Ape Drape, by the Vandals.

N.O., by Kyuss.

Yours Is No Disgrace, Siberian Khatru, No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Needed, Parallels, and Owner of a Lonely Heart, by Yes? (What do you mean, I'm obsessed?)

No?

(I feel sick. I need to have a pee.)

A driving song is one that you can sing along to, so I think that I should resent the suggestion that I'm an idiot! The head-banging is not de rigueur

re: IRT are we talking the Dalton Highway (Fairbanks to Deadhorse)? That road is one long haul so you will need a lot of music to listen to at least from Fairbanks to Coldfoot. Am privaledged to have gone up that road myself. It's beautiful country up there. When you lose sight of the pipeline, it's all pristine wilderness. I can almost imagine what it was like for the first people who came across the Rockies or up to Alaska. Not sure if the tour up to Prudhoe Bay is still available, I went up pre 9/11 and we were lucky enough to have seen the aurora twice during the trip north...and that was late September 2000. Our tour guide didn't play any music on the ride up, I think I was the only one with a discman on the bus (I had lowered the average age of the tour group by 15 years or so) and all I had were John Denver songs. Those worked pretty well up there too.

That's EXACTLY what I mean and why I started this thread. I'd also say that they make you wish you were going along one of those long American highways that take hours if not days to cover.

Not what I was thinking of when I started this thread. That's more like singing sea shanties or Ten Green Bottles or school children singing Price Tag on the school bus or coach just to annoy the driver.

And for those really bad trip, Thelma and Louise, driving off the edge of a cliff moments:

Cassandra Geminni (D) Multiple Spouse Wounds, by The Mars Volta

It's only 46 seconds long: just about enough time to hit those jagged rocks below. (But if it's a particularly tall cliff, I recommend playing the song on a continuous loop.) the finger smiley

There's some great music here it's true, but an awful lot would suit the sort of laid back journey when you have no particular place to go, i.e. a snooze cruise.

I thought the original thread was about driiiiiiiiiiving.

You know, getting from A to B in as short a time as possible (but safely, of course).

Overtaking whenever possible (safely, of course) - taking no prisoners - winning!

So, with that in mind, I'll add these that I'm amazed haven't been suggested before.

I Saw Her Standing There - Beatles

Bat Out Of Hell - Meat Loaf

Paradise By The Dashboard Light - Meat Loaf

Correct, I guess I made the error of searching the thread for the name of an american music artist named Meat Loaf, when I should have been searching for the name of a dish of ground meat formed into a loaf shape and baked or smoked, i.e. Meatloaf.

Silly me.
