Unread threads

Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed that many new threads and posts aren't registering as 'unread' when I log in. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hi, dunno if this is a silly question, but have you by any chance checked your settings?

If not see "control centre" horizontal tool bar top of screen.

Once there check LHS column titled "Forum list"
Go down to "Options" to
"Forum settings"

As a guide my setting configuration is detailed below:

"Custom Timezone"(see drop down menu and choose)
- Default -
"Daylight Savings Time currently active":
- box ticked -
"Language"
- default -
"Message list display options:"
- Default -
"Message reading display options:"
- default -
"which follow-topic options should be selected by default?:"
- follow Topic -
" 'Add my signature to this message ' checked by default:"
- yes -

I dunno if this is of any use. In any case we'll refer to the Bawss if, after checking, your settings problem continues. Bear in mind that I'm technologically illiterate and the advice above may have absolutely zero bearing on your issue. Also there's the proverbial question "did you clear your cache" doh smiley

Cheers.

Mine seems to be okay, SRD. I showed two posts for this thread as unread. Not sure what's going on. Tru's suggestion of clearing your cache just might do it. I'd give that a try first.

I've checked my settings and they seem to be Ok and I clear my cache regularly.

As an example, I noticed the 'Help' forum had a recent posting date (but no number of unread posts/threads showing in red) when I went into the 'Help' forum there were lots of threads in bold (containing unread posts) and then when I returned to the 'Home' forum there were suddenly 22 threads unread and umpteen posts showing in the 'Help' forum. It seems, although I may be wrong, that I need to have visited a forum fairly recently for unread threads/posts to show up.

Hmm. That's a weird one, SRD, I've never experienced that particular glitch. My pages are loading very slowly today, but that's the only problem I'm having. I think we'll have to wait for K to check this out and see if it's a problem he's familiar with.

Just an idea; were the threads marked as 'sticky'? I always use the 'Recent Messages' access, but I believe the 'sticky posts' do not show up, individually.

I meant to say that I had put a test post in 'knock knock' in the 'Pub' phorum, for SRD.

Not sticky, and the 'knock knock thread registers, as I said, it seems to be in forum I haven't visited recently rather than the ones that are quite active and therefore visited regularly.

Could also be that the Great Technical Lords in the Sky were tinkering about with site controls ... that might be an explanation.

SRD,

What browser are you using? and if you have the facility, does using an alternative browser exhibit the same behaviour?

King K has a better grasp of the cogs of the forum, but off the top of my head, does this have something to do with initially being on the forum as a guest, then logging in.

ie, if you have the forum saved as a favourite/bookmark and use this initially to get to the front page, that favourite may have its own cookie associated with it, along with its own count of threads you've seen as a guest, and then if you get logged in invisibly by your browser when you click your initial link, this may cause a different cookie with a different record of your activities.

Clearing your cache probably wouldn't affect this issue unless you've specifically asked your cache-cleaner to clean cookies at the same time. To test this, you should find a cookie cleaner that allows you to delete individual cookies, and just delete the ones from this site to avoid affecting your cookies from other sites.

Or i could be completely wrong.doh smiley

I use Mozilla FireFox. I must admit I haven't tried a different browser but the problem doesn't appear to happen often, in fact I'd only noticed it when I saw a recent date on this forum but it wasn't showing as unread. I don't usually browse any of the forum as a guest, I log in as soon as I pull up the index page from my Bookmarks and other, more recently visited forum, show up as unread. I did wonder if I might have marked the forum as 'Mark forum read' but when I entered it there were 22 unread threads (marked in bold type), of which I read a couple, and when I returned to the main index there were then 20 threads showing as unread in this forum. I'll have a look at the cookies that are set from here.

Great idea, Rick. So simple. doh smiley

(Reminds me of the tech who gets the call from the woman complaining that her PC won't work. She's tried everything but nothing will work. He asks her to try turn off the PC and turn it back on to reboot. She tells him to hold on while she gets a candle. He asks what she needs a candle for. She tells him it's too dark and she can find the button because of the power outage.)
