Willie Nelson, Don Williams, Roger Miller, Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gayle, Johnny Cash, Dylan, Ry Cooder (does he count?) Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, Dylan, (oooops keyboard seems to have got stuckeye popping smiley) Did I mention Bob ....? the finger smiley

I was directing it at Ivor's comment about the pieces. I love to hear Patsy sing it....Ivor...prolly not so much. Then Pete said he wanted fish for Friday, and I said I couldn't fish slap him evah!!!

That probably does not help clear this up at all. But brain is shot by this point, what little I had to begin with.

Quote

Still doesn't change the fact that I l-o-a-t-h-e every sound and twang of her revolting voice!

Now, see, for me? You can replace the word "her" (Patsy) in that sentence, and replace it with "his" (Bob). On all else, we agree 'cept maybe Willie....sometimes....

I didn't think it was a Southern bash, Tru, it's just that Patsy Cline and Kitty Wells are considered THE country music Diva's in the South.

Seeeeeesh! Paul, reading your post while recording Omnibus2 of JG ... so caaaaaaaan't click your link for at least another quarter of an hour ......... (owch! curiosity can b torture). I s'pose dissin Bob is akin to bad mouthing Bach .... sigh! But there ya go!winking smiley

Further more, the idea of allowing the brain's communicating nerve endings to even consider the two names in parallel seems pretty heretic to me! Ha!smoking smiley (that green sun-bespectacled dope smoking smiley's pretty close to a portrait of "Our Bob" imo) grinning smiley

.... later ... after clicking the link ...

Hey I've not heard any of this series ... it sounds a scream! Are you suggesting it's due round on 7 any time soon? I got as far as the actual programme link but ... needless to say ... the LA had long since been pulled.confused smiley

PS: Oooops - Forgot Gordon Lightfoot!

Just had a look and they're available on radioarchive.cc

All of the Blaggers Guides are interesting, the writers actually know their subject (or at least give that impression) and the writing is nicely cruel in the way that only a true fan can be.

Don't think any have been on 7, though some get repeated on 6Music in the Plays It Again slot.

Aha! Nice timing Paul. Tomorrow there's a chap coming over to lend a hand sorting out some back-up issues on my system. I'll collar him to help me set up torrents.

BTW, for a while I was a closet Country fan. A couple of cool mates from Cambridge had set up a full package roving lease-a-discotheque company and used to hire kids to DJ the various plush venues around the globe that had signed up for the service. The company was doing well, some parts of the map being more or less in the dark ages with regard to pop music when compared to the UK ... Anyhow I was lucky enough to go on several tours in my student days during the vacations (a blast). To keep the music right up-to-date the deal included regular record replenishment and a wide selection of easy listening too. I was but a strip of a thing and couldn't even spell "country", let alone recognize it. Thanks to this experience, among the many wonderful artists I discovered, was Don Williams. It took quite a while to own up to my inclination publicly though eye popping smiley After all this was peak Screaming Lord Such/Jagger/Stewart epoch. How could such an admission ever have been lived down? whistling smiley

Bob wrote great songs....he just shouldn't sing them, imo. I feel exactly the same as you do about Patsy on this one, Tru....nails on a chalkboard for me. My husband's eldest brother also worshiped at the Dylan altar, he loved to sing Karaoke and he'd always choose Bob. He was his ab-fav. Truth be told, I think he had a bit of a "bro-mance" with him smiling smiley

My husband is also a fan (not anything like is big bro, though). He and I are pretty simpatico about music, but there are certain artists where we "split the sheets". His likes (I don't) Dylan, Alanis Morrisette and Frank Zappa. I like (he doesn't) Steely Dan, The Doors and Abba (EVERYBODY hates Abba, but I finally have a buddy in my daughter-in-law! I've been surrounded by men for so long in my family....finally....some girl power up in here!!! winking smiley ).

I have such weird and eclectic musical taste, I'm always out of whack with somebody, so it's not surprising. But as you say, horses for courses. smiling smiley

Wow, Paul, I would like to here that one wonder, if they'd play it if I suggested it?....especially the George Strait and Bakersfield....that's my (red) neck o' the woods, y'all! Do you think it's R7 worthy or more a strictly music sort of thing.

Tru, you're closet country story, sounds like my sister's who came out awhile back by admitting, during that same time, she used to put on Mom and Dad's Dean Martin records when she was alone in the house. smiling smiley But admittedly, no one rocked "The Cool" like Dino, baby smoking smiley

In all honesty, Tru doesn't deserve a fish-slap. She didn't actually post a PC clip (as opposed to a pc clip). However, someone named Janaru did.

So did Ivor

Ha! Nice one J-ru! Up to usual standardsmug b...
Steely Dan RULES! Dinooooo and Dylan for eeeevah (had a really bad pash for that guy blushing smiley 2 prolly still doeye rolling smiley) and as for Zappa: asked a question about the Byrds, replies cool as you please, without an instant's hesitation: "I only listen to my music, so I couldn't tell you." eye popping smileyLuuuuuuuuuuuved that boy! At the Shepton Mallet festival (we escaped boarding school for it ... ha!) Now he was COOL. Really get off on Zeppelin, Tull, Dig The Communards, Terence Trent d'Arby, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, can do Blues bands up the yin yang. But I can say as much for Tallis, Byrd, Elgar, Schubert's Lieder, Bach, Monteverdi and Gounod who all come over as mega stars for me too.

And as for ABBA, Carpenters and Everly Bros, you diss 'em on PAIN OF DEATHmoody smiley

I was weaned on Freunch song : Charles Trénet, Jean Ferrat, Leo Ferré, Gilbert Becaud, Aznavour, Barbara, Gainsbourg, Gainsbourg, (ooooops hitting the Dylan fixation here) blow me clean away too. Oh and there's this great Argentinian singer from the twenties, Conchita Piquer ... (spelling?)

Is this eclectic enough for you cool smiley

Lists are dull, so apologies! You ever hear of "The Incredible String Band" a bunch of weirdos from the end sixties, early seventies? Now they were strange!

... and so on ... and so on ... and so on ...

"And as for ABBA, Carpenters and Everly Bros, you diss 'em on PAIN OF DEATH"

No problem here! smiling smiley

"Is this eclectic enough for you"

Yup, sounds about right! thumbs up

"You ever hear of "The Incredible String Band" "

No. Haven't heard of them. But I do love these guys...if you can find their original video it's worth checking out....

A friend loaned me a boxed set of CDs this week, called Radio Days - Celebrating the Golden Era of Radio. It's mainly really old songs, which is the bit the he likes - he'd even older than me - but there are some comedy clips and songs. One of my favourites is

Another one is Stan Freburg's I've Got You Under My Skin. However, my favourite Freberg is the first piece of this

I was going to post this elsewhere, but this thread drifted enough to make it an appropriate place.

A while ago I was looking for the old music hall song "His Pop-Up Wouldn't Pop-Up Any More" (yes, it's a subtle as the title suggests, we're talking single entendre not double), for someone who was having a problem getting a pop-up to running on an application we have. The idea was to solve the problem (which I did because I managed that system until my cancer was diagnosed) and then play this song to taunt him.

But couldn't find it anywhere - what I did find was this blog which has a link to download a copy of "Listen To The Banned: 20 Risqué Songs Of The 20s and 30s" which are in the same territory. Not something you'll treasure, and you'll wince at some of it, but novel to say the least.

Entering the realms of the esoteric with some of those sites PAWwinking smiley

As planned v v kind electronics engineer (currently unemployed, hopefully only temporarily) spent a few hours checking over my system here. I'm now the proud owner of Opera* and utorrent (I think!eye popping smiley). He gave the same advice as most of you wise pc gurus did; "wander off track with torrents and you're on your own".

He seems to think get iPlayer is only possible if the system's Linux, which isn't my case, so I've given up on that fttb.

Ivor: I'm expecting to spend a pleasant evening following up on your music recommendationsthumbs up.

*it all happened pretty fast, but I'm under the impression Opera's torrent was rather hard (impossible?) to fathom Jan.

It shouldn't be, Tru, you just click on the torrent download and it does it automatically. You shouldn't have to open anything in your browser.

Gosh! What a loser! Were any injured/killed apart from the pilot?

The political implications of the train crash are starting to blow out of all proportion and police, judges, politicians are closing ranks thick and fast in an effort to censor the populace ... It's going to be a looooong haul! The surviving driver is too ill to be interviewed (off the danger list now though) everything is kind of in suspension! They're really creeps here, and have trodden the same deadly path of railway privatisation taken by the British, just in a somewhat more half-hearted way.

News reports are starting to clearly articulate just how it is that the "reformed" railway service functions (that's a polite word) now and it is simply grotesque. The company responsible for stations tannoys through which announcements of delays are made, is totally separate from the firm holding responsibility for train delays ... There is little or no incentive for the latter to insist on maintenance of said loud speakers anywhere ... The upshot? Even on an good day there is information chaos, with travellers not having a clue what is going on ....

And that's just one facet of the plummeting situation. Nothing's been done to maintain the assets of a network that is over 150 years old.
